Walk into any store that sells leather jackets and you will encounter the word "genuine leather" used as if it means something premium. It doesn't. Genuine leather is actually one of the lowest grades in the leather hierarchy — a category that covers everything from decent hides processed carelessly to scraps bonded with synthetic resins and embossed to look like the real thing.
The leather industry has an awareness problem: the terminology is widely misunderstood, and marketers have exploited this for decades. This guide cuts through it. If you are spending serious money on a leather jacket, you need to understand what you are buying.
How leather is graded — the basic structure of a hide
Leather comes from animal hide — most commonly bovine (cowhide), though lambskin, goatskin, and horsehide are also used in premium garment leather. The hide has a layered structure, and the quality of the final leather product depends enormously on which layers are used and how they are processed.
From outermost to innermost, the main layers are:
- The grain layer — the outermost surface of the hide. This is the densest, tightest fibre structure in the skin, with the highest tensile strength and the most distinctive natural surface texture. It is the layer that develops patina.
- The junction — the transitional area between the grain and corium layers. Still strong and tight, but less distinctive on the surface.
- The corium — the fibrous middle and lower layers of the hide. Less tightly structured, more porous, significantly weaker than the grain layer. Used for split leather and suede.
Understanding this structure makes the grade hierarchy immediately logical.
The grades, explained
Full-grain leather — the highest grade
Full-grain leather uses the entire thickness of the hide from the grain surface down, with the natural grain layer fully intact. The surface is not sanded, buffed, or embossed to remove natural markings. What you see is the actual surface of the animal's skin — grain pattern, natural variation, and all.
This is why full-grain leather is the most durable grade. The grain layer is the strongest part of the hide, and leaving it fully intact means the leather retains maximum tensile strength. The tight fibre structure also makes it the most breathable grade — it manages moisture through natural channels in the grain — and the most resistant to water at the surface.
The natural markings that full-grain leather carries — slight variations in grain density, occasional small natural marks from the animal's life — are not flaws. They are evidence of authenticity. A perfectly uniform surface on a leather jacket should be a warning sign, not a selling point.
Full-grain leather is the only grade that develops a true patina. It is what Blaatan uses exclusively.
Top-grain leather — the second tier
Top-grain leather is also cut from the outer layer of the hide, but the surface has been sanded or buffed to remove natural markings and then either embossed with an artificial grain pattern or left with a smooth finish. A surface coating — often polyurethane — is applied to protect the altered surface and provide consistency.
Top-grain leather is more uniform in appearance than full-grain and can be made to look very clean and expensive. Its weakness is longevity: sanding the grain layer removes some of the tightest fibres, reducing durability, and the surface coating limits breathability. Over time, the coating wears away, and what is underneath is a sanded hide that ages poorly — peeling and cracking rather than developing character.
Top-grain leather is the standard for mid-to-premium price handbags and shoes where uniformity of appearance is valued over longevity. For a jacket intended to last decades, it is a compromise.
Corrected-grain leather — buyer beware
Corrected-grain leather is full or top-grain hide that has been heavily sanded and embossed with an artificial grain pattern. The natural surface is almost entirely removed and replaced with a manufactured one. A thick coating is applied to protect the embossed surface.
Corrected-grain leather is used to salvage hides that have too many surface imperfections for top-grain use. It can be made to look remarkably consistent, but it ages very badly — the coating peels, the artificial grain flattens, and there is no natural structure left underneath to develop any character. Most "leather" products in the ₹3,000–₹8,000 range use corrected-grain leather presented as something better.
Split leather — the lower tiers
Split leather is made from the corium — the fibrous lower layers of the hide after the grain layer has been separated off for higher-grade uses. It has no natural grain surface of its own and must have an artificial one embossed onto it. Split leather is significantly weaker than grain-layer products and has poor resistance to wear and water.
It is not without uses — suede is made from split leather, and the napped surface is beautiful in the right applications. But for a jacket that will be worn regularly in varying conditions, split leather will not hold up.
Bonded leather — not leather
Bonded leather is made from leather scraps and fibres that have been ground up, mixed with polyurethane or latex binders, and pressed onto a fabric backing. It contains leather in the way that a chipboard bookshelf contains wood. The surface is embossed to look like grain.
Bonded leather has essentially no durability. It typically begins to peel, crack, and separate within one to three years of use. It should not be sold as leather at all, and yet it appears regularly in jacket products sold at premium prices — because buyers cannot tell the difference from the outside.

How to identify full-grain leather in person
When examining a jacket in person, there are several indicators of full-grain quality:
- Natural variation — real full-grain leather will have subtle variation in grain pattern across the hide. Perfectly uniform grain is embossed, not natural.
- The smell — genuine leather has a characteristic organic smell. Heavily coated or bonded leather smells of plastic or chemical finish.
- The edge feel — look at the cut edges on interior seams. Solid grain leather will show a compressed, consistent edge. Lower grades may show fibrous or layered edges.
- The weight — full-grain leather is heavy relative to its thickness. A full-grain jacket will feel substantial.
- The flex — bend the leather and release it. Full-grain leather flexes cleanly and returns. Bonded leather cracks, splits, or shows the substrate beneath at flex points.
